Whilst none of us are a fan of politics, they can create changes that effect the services we offer. When this happens, as a responsible company, we aim to keep everyone informed.

As you may be aware, the UK is now in the transition period for leaving the European Union. Unfortunately, the end of the transition period will likely result in you loosing your EU Domain if you are a UK Citizen.

EURID is the non-profit organization appointed by the European Commission to overlook .eu domain name registrations.

They recently announced that UK Organisations/Businesses that aren’t registered within the European Union and UK Citizens that don’t have Citizenship with an EU Nation will be ineligible for .eu domains after the transition period ends.

Key Dates

Note: These dates are subject to change if the transition period is extended. They are correct as of August 2020.

1 October 2020 – UK Registrations will be sent a reminder that they will be ineligible to keep an .eu domain name after the transition period, unless they form an EU Entity or have dual citizenship with another European Union country.

21 December 2020 – UK Registrants that still don’t meet the registration criteria will be given a final reminder that there domain is at imminent risk of being deleted.

1 January 2021 – Domains held by UK Citizens will be suspended – the website will stop functioning along with email, and you will no longer be able to transfer, other than to an eligible company/person.

1 January 2022 – All domains that are owned by ineligible registrations will be released for general registration.

Changing Registrant

If you change your registration to an EU Citizen or Company, please be aware you may be required to provide evidence of their eligibility. Documentation required could include:

  • A passport from another EU member state
  • Proof of residence in another EU member state
  • Company registration information from another EU member state
  • Proof of your company having a physical presence (such as an office or warehouse) in another EU member state

Changing Domain

  • If you don’t already own an alternative domain, then you will need to register a new domain such as .co.uk or .com.
  • If you host your website with us, please submit a support ticket and we can change your primary domain. We can also setup a domain alias so all web traffic and seo forwards to the new website, until your registration is revoked.
  • Update your devices to use the new domain; in particular your mail clients as your email will now be the new domain so your username will have changed.
  • Update your customers, marketing material, and social media to to let people know about the change.
